And then you may have wondered: Does it mean rain is coming? Is bad weather on the way? Or are the birds trying to tell us something?

It’s an interesting question because birds are remarkably responsive

to their surroundings. But the reason they’re flying low isn’t always connected to the weather.

Sometimes they’re looking for food. Sometimes they’re avoiding strong winds. Other times they’re preparing to land, escaping a predator, or simply following a normal flight path.

So before you assume those low-flying birds are predicting a storm, let’s take a closer look at what might really be happening.

What Does It Mean When Birds Fly Low?

There isn’t one single explanation for low-flying birds.

Their flight height can change because of food, wind, predators, temperature, migration, habitat, and their immediate destination.

A bird flying just a few feet above the ground may be doing something completely different from another bird flying at the same height.

That’s why it’s helpful to look at what the birds are actually doing.

Are they swooping repeatedly?

Are they traveling in a straight line?

Are they circling?

Are they suddenly changing direction?

Are dozens of birds flying together? ChooseBird Feeders

Those little details can provide much more information than altitude alone.

Why Do Birds Fly Low?

They’re Searching for FoodOne of the simplest explanations is food.

Many birds feed on insects, and insects can be especially abundant close to the ground, around grass, gardens, fields, ponds, and waterways.

You may see birds repeatedly swooping downward, turning sharply, and then climbing again.
